How my ADHD brain mastered goal setting

Hey Reader,

For a long time, I felt filled with shame that I would set goals and never meet them.

I assumed it was a sign that something was wrong with me.

  • That I was lazy
  • That I was a failure
  • That I would always struggle

It took me a long time to realize my lack of success had nothing to do with my inherent worth as a person…

And everything to do with the fact that I never learned HOW to work toward my goals.

At least not in a way that worked for me.

I’m one of the many people who didn’t get her ADHD diagnosis until I was well into middle age (39, to be exact). Looking back, it now makes perfect sense that “typical” goal setting never quite worked for me.

You see when you have ADHD, it’s just harder to make progress on things that aren’t intrinsically interesting to you. And you’re a bit more likely to get overwhelmed and not do anything.

So you can still be monstrously productive, but you need a different strategy than most neurotypical folks.

Now, I know there are a few things that make the difference in my ability to not only set effective goals but reach them. Over and over again.

Goal Setting & Execution Strategies

And while this has all been exceptionally helpful for my ADHD brain, I know this helps neurotypical folks as well.

Bite Sized Steps

If it’s something I really want to achieve and I’m not making any progress toward it, I haven’t broken it down into simple enough steps.

Otherwise it just feels to big and unwieldy. I get overwhelmed, don’t know what to do, and so I dont’ do anything.

Instead, I figure out the first 3 tiny steps I can take, so it feels manageable and I can engineer quick and easy wins that build confidence.

Make It Measurable

Too often, we set vague goals that sound nice, but make it impossible to know if we’ve actually been successful. It gets hard to stay motivated so we lose hope and give up.

Instead, I define measurable results that will show me if I’m on the right track.

Keep Control

A lot of our business goals require the actions of other people, like increasing revenue. I still think those are worthwhile goals, but we want to make sure that we are focused on the activities that we can take to get us toward that goal.

Instead of simply setting goals about hitting monthly revenue numbers, I also include the very specific actions I will take to get my business there. So then, even if I don’t hit those revenue numbers, I can be proud of the actions I took. And I can reflect on what changes I can make to get me closer to that goal.

~

I'm not saying that goal setting and execution will be magically easy, with these 3 steps, but I promise you they will be significantly easier—reducing the overwhelm and resulting shame spiral.

As we wrap up 2024, I know I’m thinking a lot about goal setting and execution plans so that I can start the year with a solid, actionable plan that will come dangerously close to guaranteeing my success in 2025.

And Dr. Monica and I decided to lead a workshop that will teach you how to do the same.

Annual review and goal setting

Hey Reader, If you’re like me, you find the idea of a new year ahead motivating but also intimidating and maybe even a little exhausting. Especially if you’ve got an onslaught of family events and obligations ahead. But a little reflection and planning can change the trajectory of your life and business. I know that sounds dramatic, but it’s true. I learned this first hand in 2024. Last year, my husband and I visited my family for the holidays. It was kind of awful. We both got sick, couldn’t...

3 pillars of a freedom based business

Hey Reader, If you’re at all like me (and I’m pretty damn sure you are), a huge part of the appeal of entrepreneurship is the promise of freedom. Freedom to spend money on people, experiences and things that interest you. Freedom to work with clients who appreciate you and you feel honored to serve. Freedom to spend your time on work that lights you up. But if you’re anything like I was for the first 6 years of my entrepreneurial journey, freedom was elusive. A far-off idea that you knew was...

why hustle culture won't grow your business

Hey Reader, For most of my career and journey as an entrepreneur, I wore my get-sh*t-done attitude like a badge of honor. I wasn’t the smartest, the luckiest, or the most well-connected. So, I thought I needed to compensate by outworking everyone else. And you know, for a while, it worked. I was scrappy AF I wasn’t afraid to try new things I took big swings—some of which connected I had zero formal training as a marketer, event organizer, or entrepreneur. So, I made progress in every area of...
